True American Success by Eric on 04/05/2012. Trim: 2009 Dodge Durango Limited 4X4, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Very comfortable, so much power, great boat hauler too with no struggles in acceleration or suspension sag. This suv is the last of the real Durango and I purchased it used with only 9400 miles. Limited with the HEMI and optioned out. I am also an original owner of the '98 model and the change is unreal. Great styling with the Limited wheels giving it a custom look. Fantastic sound system, useable 3rd seat and a long trip vehicle that results in a very enjoyable time Color is light sandstone with leather/micro suede interior. Replaced door bumper trim with mopar chrome from the Aspen and added factory Durango nameplate emblems to each front door. Got rid of the horrible Goodyear tires.
Cons: The second row legroom wasn't improved enough unfortunately. Better seating position with reclining seat backs is great but front seats still need to be moved up for better room to the second row passengers. Chrysler really went cheap and excluded the obvious that was surprising: No glove box light even available (added a factory one that fit where it was designed to), no lights in the console (had to add this too - how are you supposed to see anything at night?). Rear doors no padding? Roof rack needed to have cross bars designed into the side rails for a complete roof rack system. The accessory "sport bars" whistle and look pretty lousy too. First gen.Durango had them. C'mon Chrysler!!
Overall review: I had always regretted not having the funds to purchase the last real Durango back when they were new. The new generation is great for being a crossover station wagon. It's lousy for the historical Durango nameplate - it's not an SUV. Finding this gem was a dream come true and it's been everything (better) I wanted after driving the '98 and appreciating it for over 200k miles. Great endless power, cool exhaust note, quiet with minimal wind noise. Steering system sensitivity and response is comparable to our Chrysler 300c. Handles heavy wind without even knowing it's there. Crazy smooth over everything with a large vehicle feel but without wallow. It doesn't sway on corners at high speed when hitting a swell either. Feels square and planted. No jitter-like ride. Love this Durango even if this review is for an "older" model year (still smells new and looks it too) Had to share.
