I'd Pick the 06 if I had to do it again, or a Mazda by An MSN Autos Consumer on 06/29/2009. Trim: 2005 Ford Explorer XLS 4.0L 2WD, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: The ride, the size, the nimbleness, interior comfort, interior quietness, pruge coolant system. Plugs easier to get to than on my '97 4.0.
Cons: Rear end whine, drive-by-wire lag (Mazda's don't lag), even though the EGR system has been changed on the DBW model, problems still arise. Gate window squeak, rotors warp easily, sealed transmission (no dipstick). Styling
Overall review: I'm 43 and have owned almost 60 cars, I do 99% of my own work so this info is accurate. At first glance Ford did a poor job in styling this truck from 02-05, the looks are "styless" and the early models (02, 03) are plagued with, tranny, 4x4 and all still have EGR problemsand lil niggly electronic problems. Ford, these EGR problems are annoying, FIX THEM! Have your suppliers, build better clusters, multi-function switches, rear-ends, door switches. The rear-ends tend to get noisey over time and some even break. See Ford's TSB's. The "drive-by-wire" models lag like a Benz, but Mazda dosen't have this problem. Fun truck to drive, but as far as ownership, our '97 seems more solid. When Ford stepped off into this 3rd Gen, a lot changed from the norm and they were not ready. Ford needs to hire more REAL guys like me!!!!!!!!! Now, you may be asking why did I buy one? Well, I got a one owner at a steal of a deal. His daily commute was on good roads so it still drives like new at 105k.
