Replacement costs! by Rehk from VA on 04/09/2013. Trim: 2005 Audi A6 4.2, Owned 4 years.
Pros: I bought my 2005 A6 4.2 about 3 years ago, used with 56k mile on it. It has plenty of power and the styling fits my taste. It has all the bells and whistles of a luxury car. We travel in comfort and handles very well on all types of road conditions. BUT.
Cons: Just before Easter weekend I went to start my car and nothing happened. The wheels were locked so I could not even move the car out of my garage. My Audi dealer recomended that I tow the car in(50 miles). They informed me the "brain" in the steering column died. The whole steering column needed to be replaced at a total cost of over $2500. The part was not in stock. I believe this an engineering flaw in the design of this vehicle. We could of been stranded anywhere remote, with little recourse. I informed "Audi care" of my situation and they basically said because of the age and mileage (less than 100k miles) too bad. I have to say I cannot recommend an Audi with this flawed component.
Overall review: Very stylish car and great handling. Very expensive to maintain. The computer component of the steering column needed to be replaced . I don't believe the whole steering column, with labor, was necessary.
