Not enough space to rave about my RX-8 by Oz in Rock Springs on 11/27/2007. Trim: 2004 Mazda RX-8 Manual, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Handling is superb. Firm feel on the corners, yet soft enough not to beat you you death in the city. Perfect 50/50 balance dominates in the corners. Good viewing area up front, and the 9 speaker Bose system rocks. Electric one touch - open sunroof is a great touch. Ah, let's not forget the speed sensitive power steering, ample assistance to carve through a crowded parking lot without being flighty at highway speeds. Gearing with the 6-speed manual, mated with the 9,000rpm redline means you will always have the gear you want. Large, easy-to-read guages with cleaver lighting, and ultra-bright headlights makes you think this car was made for the dark.
Cons: You will hear everyone complain about the mileage, and for good reason, that little 1.3 liter humming under the hood hits hard on the 14 gal fuel tank, and at a 91 octane minimum, that ain't cheap. What's worse, as any fan of the wankle rotory will know, she likes to drink down the oil, as well. Hardly if ever will you make if from one oil change to the next without dipping below the 'add' line. In fact, Mazda actually suggests you check the oil every other fuel up! But, all that being said, it is, after all, a SPORTS car, if you are looking for economy, get a corolla.
Overall review: I absolutely LOVE this car. This is my first rotory engine, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I do, myself, use this car as a daily driver, and a gulp, and continue to pump the $50 of fuel every 3-4 days, but the driving experience alone, mixed with the more than occasional head turn is well worth it. If you have never driven a rotory before, it is a whole new school of driving. Due to the operational nature of the motor, the low-end torque is all but non-existent. Indeed, not much happens below 4,500rpm. Though, how many cars can go from 6th gear to 4TH gear at 84 mph, and still accelerate? Anyway, I ramble. Well worth the extra fuel if you want something subtle, yet well better than your average commuter car, and rather unmistakable to anyone paying attention.
