Smooth ride, but becareful of the steering mechanisms.

Pros:
Smooth ride, but engine should be bigger for the weight of this car. The car does move well at high speeds, like when passing on the highway. The styling is good and the car is fun to drive on long trips. The front seats are very comfortable and the back seats are adequate. Plenty of room for the family.
Cons:
The first couple years were good, but we had to have a control arm repeatedly tightened and eventually replaced. Next the plastic bushings on the rack broke and then damaged the power steering pump. The power steering pump was easily replaced, but a little pricey. The big problem is repairing the rack. Volvo has gone through several revisions of the rack, indicating that they recognize there is a problem, but no voluntary or mandatory recall has been made. Seems like a big safety risk if you can't turn the steering wheel correctly. Also, the cost is very high to replace the rack and the other parts that need to be replaced due to the redesign. Thanks alot Volvo!
Overall review:
Overall we like the car and the way it rides, but lately we have had some higher than expected expenses. We feel very safe in the car with its structural design, but the steering issue is making us wonder. Apparently, Volvo has known about the issue, recognizes that the initial rack design has problems, and is now passing the cost along to us. Shouldn't a safety issue of this magnitude be recognized in a recall of some sort? What would happen if some driver or an animal jumps out in front of the car and the first option is to turn the steering wheel to avoid the object, but it won't turn.
