Could Have Been a Disaster. by Mike on 01/21/2004. Trim: 1998 Mercury Mountaineer 4WD, Owned 3 years.

Pros: Overall styling and ride OK, a little bouncy...but nice. Additionally, I liked the height (ground clearance).

Cons: Had little problems that seemed re-occuring. Throttle body CONSTANTLY getting dirty and coughing at idle (3 air filters replaced in 2 years to attempt to correct). No, I didn't live in a dusty climate! OD Off Light constantly flashed (for 4 months straight!), shop told me it was likely a sign of transmission sensor failure OR transmission was likely to need rebuilt SOON. I drove another month on it, and it began hard shifting on down shifts. Only Dealer could read error codes, and I was displease with EVERY Ford dealer I have been to (for various Service reasons...owned an Explorer previously). Will not EVER take my car to a Ford dealer for service.

Overall review: Too much money at stake to risk in this car....buy something else.
