The new VW Jetta's design is far more mature than the prior version. With its updated front grille, sleeker headlights and desirable European profile, the Jetta is far better-looking than the Toyota Corolla or the Honda Civic. Inside the car, VW treats the driver to a great console and quality plastics throughout the cabin. The central dashboard is easy to read and use, without being too distracting and allowing the driver to lose focus on the road. The 4-cylinder engine is smooth, but the engine note sounds muffled and somewhat like a diesel powerplant; I achieved a mediocre 23 mpg in mixed driving. However, I was impressed with the trunk space in the Jetta. There seemed to be enough cargo room for an entire 4-person family. With VW's desire to be the No. 1 automaker in the world, the updated Jetta should really help achieve this goal, especially with its attractive starting price. –Joe Chulick

The Volkswagen Jetta is unusual for sporting a 5-cylinder engine, but it delivers good fuel economy for a car this size, impressive performance and, when pushed, a throaty growl that is to die for. Accompanying the character-filled engine is a manual transmission that is the very model of smoothness, a spacious trunk, and a high-quality, stylish interior. Overall, the Jetta is one of my favorite cars of the year. If only I could get another ride in one, just so I could listen to the wonderful engine again. –Paul Hagger
