Trucks are not cheap transportation. Our F-150 EcoBoost test vehicle, with a SuperCrew cab, the EcoBoost V6 engine, and some very nice interior options, was priced near $50,000. That is a lot of money for a pickup. Happily, the F-150 is a lot of pickup and feels well worth it. The interior fits five full-size people easily and comfortably; there's lots of legroom and elbow room. Even with a short bed the F-150 is a truly big vehicle, but Ford knows how to make a truck ride and steer superbly. It's a joy to drive. The V-6 EcoBoost delivers over 15 mpg in the city, which is very impressive. Fitted with this engine the F-150 is quick when empty, and it only starts to feel slow when filled with 700 pounds of passengers or stuff. It's easy to see why trucks, and the F-150 in particular, have been such popular vehicles for so long. And for me this is the best one of them all. – Paul Hagger

Ford's 2011 F-150 Lariat SuperCrew 4X4 is one premium workhorse, but with luxury-car amenities and rear-seat legroom to rival a stretch limo. With four full-size doors, the SuperCrew is a direct competitor with full-size SUVs, trading the covered cargo area for pickup functionality. The big news with this truck is Ford's new EcoBoost engine, a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine that puts out 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, more power and torque than Ford's 5.0-liter V8. The EcoBoost delivers excellent drivability with a wide torque band and a 6-speed automatic to keep it in the optimum range. Just because this new engine is a small V6 don't expect it to sound like a sports car; when you put your foot in it, the EcoBoost sounds more like a big rig than a flyweight. Fuel economy is better than the V8 options, but it's still in full-size truck range, rated at 15 mpg city/21 mpg highway. – Mike Meredith

It's a given for most truck buyers that if you want any hauling capability you need to opt for the V8. Now Ford has an option that changes that thinking. Driving the F-150 equipped with Ford's new EcoBoost V6 engine, I never missed those extra two cylinders. Initial acceleration feels a bit weak, but only for a second — just as you're thinking this V6 just doesn't work, the truck takes off like a shot. And with 365 horsepower, it should. Fuel economy is nothing to jump up and down about, but I did see around 15 mpg, considerably better than would be expected from an equally powerful V8. In addition to the impressive powerplant, the F-150 SuperCrew is a great truck to drive. It's a bumpy ride — expected from a truck — but it handles well and its seats are comfortable. The rear seat is huge — it seems bigger than those found in most large sedans — and the seat bottom folds up to provide a large space for cargo that you may not want to put in the open bed. The F-150 SuperCrew could make a great option for the family car — that is, if it could fit in my garage. – Perry Stern
