2012 BMW M6 convertible: Flash drive review

The BMW M6 convertible has lots of power. Its output of 500 horsepower is enough to put a smile on any enthusiast's face. But the M6 isn't only about the engine, it's also about the transmission, and in convertible form it's also about appearance and the feeling of open-air motoring. If only the rest of the car could live up to the engine. The transmission and stop-start system make the M6 hard to drive smoothly and rob the driver of the fun experience the engine implies. The convertible top doesn't make the car feel open; instead, you feel like you're sunk down in a high-sided bathtub. The M6 version of the convertible doesn't handle as well as the regular 6-Series convertible, as the stiffer suspension doesn't suit the more flexible body. Overall, the BMW M6 just doesn't measure up to the comparable Mercedes in almost any way. –Paul Hagger
I don't think I've ever loved and hated a car so much at the same time. On the plus side, the M6 looks great and the sound from the four big pipes in back is wonderful; it's especially enjoyable with the top down. BMW's new 7-speed double-clutch transmission is much better than the previous sequential manual — shifts happen impressively fast whether manually shifting with steering-wheel mounted paddles or in automatic mode. The car is on the large side, but it still has excellent handling and tight steering, making entrance ramps great fun. However, BMW almost ruins the entire experience with its convoluted electronics. Standard traction control is so intrusive that I was stranded in the middle of an intersection when trying to accelerate into traffic. It is possible to adjust the stability control, as well as the suspension, steering and shifting — which add considerable performance — but every time the car is restarted, everything is set back to basic. And to top it off, I still couldn't figure out how to put the M6 in park without shutting it off. It's a shame that BMW has to take such a wonderful car and make it so frustrating to operate. –Perry Stern
