Flash Drive: 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a new Korean pony car (if there can be such a thing). Unlike the American entries in the segment, the Genesis looks thoroughly modern and is the better for it. The smooth styling imposes a big penalty for back-seat passengers, however; the angle of the rear glass made it painful to try to bend my neck and fit my average frame in the rear seat. The front seats are fine. Driven energetically, the 3.8-liter V6 engine was impressive throughout the rev range, but really picks up past 4000 rpm, and is smooth enough that you're happy to be in the right gear at any time. The suspension is also impressive, but not up to true sports car stature. There's a mismatch between front and rear suspension that leaves the front tracking tighter than you intend and the rear lurching to discourage more commitment. Nevertheless, the Genesis is a fine spiritual successor to the some of the greats like the Nissan 240SX. —Paul Hagger

Hyundai's rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe is really fun to drive, boasting a stunning design that draws a lot of attention, especially when it's finished in lime-green metallic like our test car. Mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, the Coupe's 3.8-liter V6 engine puts out more than 300 horsepower. Under heavy throttle, it almost sounds like a V8 -- making the Genesis Coupe an interesting challenger to the new pony cars from Detroit. Adding the Track Package with sport suspension, Brembo brakes, 19-inch wheels and sport seats turns the Genesis Coupe into a bargain performance car, right at $30,000 with all this equipment. The suspension is firm but not too harsh. However, the steering resistance/steering effort felt a little artificial. The interior is crisp and clean, with a performance-oriented feel, and all controls are logical and easy to use. —Mike Meredith

The Genesis Coupe is a really good-looking sports car, mainly due to its angular body design. Our test car came with the 3.8-liter V6 engine, which puts out a strong 306 horsepower. It allows the Genesis Coupe to offer a raw, muscle-car feel, similar to that of a 1990s Ford Mustang. The power comes on quickly off the line, though at freeway speed its acceleration wasn't what I expect from 300-plus horsepower. Handling is predictable and the driver receives good feedback from the car. Even with some aggressive driving, I achieved 23 mpg. Inside the car, the driver has access to a great layout of controls, and the seats are supportive. Passengers in the rear seat have limited headroom, but that is to be expected with the sloped roofline. Hats off to Hyundai for creating such cool car. At almost $32,000, the top-of-the-line Genesis Coupe is not inexpensive, but still a decent value in its segment. —Joe Chulick
