The Audi A3 has impeccable styling. It always feels like a well-fitting 3-piece suit to me. Equipped with a diesel engine, it becomes even more frugal. But it's not just frugal; the A3 TDI is energetic and quick, and stands out compared with other diesel cars in America by its relatively easy-revving nature. That sporty engine matches the chassis, which is extremely responsive and definitely ready to play. This all-around goodness comes with an interior that continues the executive theme: It's efficient, smart and beautifully crafted in a techno-themed way. This A3 is the hatchback that still makes sense and looks right years after you've finished college. –Paul Hagger

This is my kind of green machine. With Audi's 2.0 TDI diesel, you can run circles around your least favorite hybrid and still get more than 40 mpg. On top of that, our test car was brilliant black with the black S-line interior and Titanium Sport Package, making it one of the best-looking A3s around. It also featured 18-inch titanium optic wheels, sport suspension, leather-Alcantara sport seats, black grille surround and piano black interior trim. The low-end torque of the 2.0 TDI combined with the S-Tronic transmission deliver plenty of power to put the A3 on par with its gasoline-powered counterpart. It gives up a little high-end horsepower, but the crisp, agile handling remains, making the A3 TDI a green machine that a driving enthusiast can love. –Mike Meredith

This A3 proves that you don't have to purchase a small, underpowered econobox to get good fuel economy. Equipped with the Titanium Sport package, our tester looked like a luxury car. Inside, this A3 was typical Audi. Up front you get sport seats with leather and Alcantara trim, and while the rear seat is a bit tight, it's definitely usable. There's plenty of cargo space with the rear seats folded flat. In fact, carrying space can rival some crossover SUVs. I do have one gripe, though: There was lots of road noise. But with fuel economy showing in the mid-30s, I could put up with a racket. The A3 TDI is a great vehicle choice for anyone. –Perry Stern
