2011 Suzuki SX4 Sport

Suzuki has done a great job of proving that an inexpensive car does not have to be just basic transportation. The SX4 Sport not only looks good with its 17-inch alloy wheels and body-color honeycomb grille, it’s actually fun to drive. No, it won’t win a drag race, but with adequate power, a smooth-shifting 5-speed manual and decent handling, the SX4 can definitely hold its own against the competition. Interior trim materials are of a higher quality than expected, seats both front and back are quite comfortable, and there’s a spacious trunk. The best part of all – all this is available for just $15,700! With multiple airbags and ABS standard, the SX4 is an excellent choice for that first time car buyer. – Perry Stern

Emblazoned on the test car’s key tag were the words “SX4 Sport Convenience,” the latter two an automotive oxymoron if ever I’ve heard one. Flashing on the blacked-out honeycomb grille before swinging into the driver’s seat, I was impressed by the SX4 Sport’s little-yet-large presence, confirmed inside by a clean dash layout, tight fit & finish, and ergonomic control placements: everything fell to hand. Turning the key and hitting the gas confirmed my suspicions: This utilitarian sedan possesses a sporty undertone that can slap a smile on your face, all for around 15 grand. With such a strong list of standard features on the SX4 Sport I have to agree with the ad copywriters: Look out Toyota and Honda, there’s a new econoboxer in town. – Eric Bellscheidt

A surprisingly good looking car, the new Suzuki SX4 Sport delivers the fuel efficiency needed from a compact car at just over $15,000, while proving that a compact doesn’t have to be boring. Retaining the tall stance of the 5-door SX4, the 4-door sport includes a body kit, black grille and 17-inch alloy wheels to give it a look that makes it fun to drive. With only 143 horsepower on tap, a little more power would be nice but drop the 5-speed manual down a gear when needed to climb hills, and real-world combined fuel economy is close to 30 mpg. The sporty feel and great value both continue on the inside with automatic air conditioning, MP3-capable audio system, aluminum trim and a leather-wrapped wheel that includes audio controls. For a little bit of style and fun to go with good fuel economy, the SX4 Sport is a great choice. – Mike Meredith
