2010 Nissan Cube — Flash Drive

The Nissan cube is the perfect example of small on the outside, big on the inside. With a wheelbase about the same as a MINI Cooper, the cube is easy to maneuver and fun to drive. It doesn't have a lot of power, but the 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine seems more than adequate. But where this boxy little car really excels is on the inside. Front and rear seats are surprisingly roomy, and there's plenty of legroom and headroom, making the cabin feel even more spacious. The cargo space is reasonable, but although the rear seats do fold down, they're not flush with the cargo floor, making it a difficult space to use properly. With an observed 27 mpg and prices starting below $14K, the cube is a great option for a first-time buyer or anyone looking for an economical, fun-to-drive machine. –Perry Stern
With its unique, oval, wrap-around windows and elongated body style, the Nissan cube looks like a junior-sized delivery van. Inside, the central lighting is complemented with a cool water-ripple-style ceiling. The seats are comfortable and feel like sitting on memory foam. There is plenty of headroom throughout the cube, and two adults can sit comfortably in the back seat. The cube also achieves admirable gas efficiency while still having enough power to scoot around town. With the 6-speed manual transmission, I was able to get 32 mpg in mixed driving. The cube should please many drivers because it is a great mix of style, efficiency and roominess. –Joe Chulick
The Nissan cube is a cross between a MINI and a Honda Element. Like a MINI, the cube has balance and charm that make it more appealing than the raw performance would suggest. Like the Element, the cube has a utility that goes far beyond its compact dimensions. With its high roof and low floor, the cube can make almost any person feel small, with headroom that beggars belief. Yet the cube manages to fall uncomfortably between these two competitors. The cube has a gearshift lever that is an inch too short, the interior plastics scratch easily, some of the scattered fasteners are much more curiosities than they are useful, and the engine has trouble pulling up hills unless you run it hard. Overall, though, it's adorable, and fortunately grows on you the longer you drive it. –Paul Hagger
