2010 Mazda MAZDASPEED3
The Mazda MAZDASPEED3 may be the best, most practical performance bargain out there. Mazda transformed its Mazda3 — already a great compact with sporty pretensions — with a 263-horsepower turbocharged engine, 6-speed manual transmission, sport suspension, sport seats and a monster hood scoop. The SPEED3 does everything well -- the steering, suspension and brakes are all good, and there's lots of power. The only real knock is that all the power goes to the front wheels, but Mazda does the best job possible of controlling wheel spin and torque steer, even programming the electronic control unit to cut power in the lower gears. Fuel economy is not as good as your typical compact, but this isn't your typical compact. –Mike Meredith
The MAZDASPEED3 is the best car I've driven all year, with the possible exception of the BMW 750Li. With a truly impressive mix of power, sophistication, space and frugality, this Mazda so perfectly fits the market it is designed for that it actually deserves to be listed along with the BMW as a best-in-class. Although the SPEED3 is only front-wheel-drive, the effective traction control allows you to pour on the massive horsepower even in wet conditions and still get all the available acceleration the car can muster. Yet when you're in the mood for comfort, a lighter foot on the throttle will reveal a wonderful sophistication. Although the styling is perhaps a little gratuitous compared with last year's more understated model, the SPEED3 is worth enduring the odd stare from a jealous public. –Paul Hagger
The MAZDASPEED3 is one of those cars that you know is going to be fun to drive just from the first look. The styling may be over-the-top for some, with its boy-racer hood scoop and big rear spoiler, but unlike the previous generation MAZDASPEED3, it's clear that this is not a standard Mazda3. And if there remains any doubt, a few minutes behind the wheel will hammer the point home. With its turbocharged engine pumping out an additional 100 horsepower and 120 lb-ft of torque over a standard 3, the SPEED3 is very quick off the line. Surprisingly, there's not much torque steer, and with a stability control that is not very obtrusive, the power is quite usable. With crisp handling and a nice rumbling exhaust note, the MAZDASPEED3's overall performance lives up to its standout looks. Add to that plenty of useful cargo space, a roomy back seat and good fuel economy, and this is a great choice as a fun everyday driver. –Perry Stern
