2010 Acura MDX — Flash Drive

By Staff of MSN Autos

The MDX is my favorite Acura on the road today. It still looks modern, even when compared with all of the new utility vehicles on the market. Inside it's luxurious and there are lots of technological gadgets. My favorite is the active cruise-control system, which applies the brakes or reduces the throttle quickly if an object such as a merging car comes into your path. I tried the system several times and it works well, especially in emergencies. And the ELS sound system is fantastic, better than most home stereo systems. Unfortunately, gas mileage is just average; I achieved 18.5 mpg in mixed driving. – Joe Chulick

Of all the Acura models, the current "design language" of the brand seems to work best on this midsize 7-passenger crossover. The grille doesn't dominate the design as much as with other models, and as a result the MDX looks smaller and more streamlined. The MDX is also pretty nimble for a large vehicle; the steering is precise and the ride is smooth and well-controlled. The 3.7-liter V6 engine delivers 300 horsepower, and the 6-speed transmission is smooth, but it's the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) that gives the MDX the balanced feel. Accelerating hard in rainy conditions, you feel the SH-AWD driving you into the turn and overcoming the tendency to understeer that would be expected in this type of vehicle. – Mike Meredith

While I'm not a big fan of the MDX's looks, I love the interior. Our test vehicle featured a beautiful black and tan 2-tone design that felt very high-end. Unfortunately, the instrument panel is confusing, with too many buttons and no obvious sections for audio or climate control; finding the rear defroster button while driving proved difficult. Seating in the second row is reasonable, and the cargo space is expansive. With 300 horsepower under the hood tied to a smooth automatic transmission, the MDX never seemed to be lacking for power. And the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) really does work, providing excellent grip and impressive control when cornering. Overall, the MDX is a great choice in the premium midsize SUV market. – Perry Stern
