Driven: 2008 Ford Edge

After years of making square SUVs, Ford has broken the mold with the stylish new Edge. A bold grille fashioned after the Fusion sedan enhances the wide stance, and lines give the impression of sportiness from every angle. The optional 20-inch wheels fit the style well.
The Edge is not a large SUV, but it certainly feels like one inside. The wide stance translates to a spacious interior that has an airy feel, owed to the optional panoramic sunroof as well as the fact that the Edge is indeed quite wide — it’s broader than the Hummer H3.
With seating for only five passengers, the rear seat easily has the space for three adults, although the back of the middle seat folds down as a center console, so that position is not particularly comfortable. In front there’s plenty of room in the center console and seats are supportive and comfortable. Gauges are white with dark numbers, which look good but are difficult to read at twilight.
A power liftgate provides easy access to the more than adequate cargo space, and rear seats fold down quickly for extra cargo capacity.
The Edge features a smooth, car-like ride with decent handling, and its standard 3.5-liter V6 provides plenty of power to get moving quickly when needed. However, with its 6-speed automatic transmission it seems that fuel economy should have been better — the trip computer registered just 16 mpg, not much better than some full-size SUVs.
One of the highlights of the Edge is the Ford Sync system powered by Microsoft (MSN Autos is owned by Microsoft). The voice recognition is the best I’ve ever used — I was able to speak out a name to call on my Bluetooth phone, and the system responded by asking if I wanted to call the work, home or mobile number. Sync’s music interaction is also very impressive, able to read titles and artists off an MP3 player or even music just copied onto a USB flash drive. Music can also be easily accessed via voice commands.
