The 2011 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid is powered by a 3.0-liter TSI supercharged V6 engine combined with an electric motor that significantly reduces fuel consumption and emission compared to the previous V8 version. The gasoline engine and electric motor can run separately or together and combined they produce 380 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. The system is combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a start-stop system automatically stops the engine during idling. Regenerative braking allows the electric motor to recover kinetic energy during coasting or braking which is stored in the nickel metal-hydride battery pack under the cargo area floor.
