New for 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with a new 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine that includes fuel-saving Multi-Displacement System technology that alternates between 4-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V8 mode when more power is needed. The new 5.7-liter HEMI is rated at 357 horsepower and 389 lb-ft of torque. Also new for 2009 Grand Cherokee Limited and Overland trim levels is a Leather Appearance Group that includes leather trim for the front-door bolsters, front-door armrests, center console armrest, instrument panel shroud and shift knob. The 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 receives the Performance Pages reconfigurable display to display performance data and the leather interior is updated to include leather trim on the upper and lower door bolsters and the instrument panel cluster shroud.

Short Take

The Grand Cherokee offers a lackluster 3.7-liter V6, and a powerful 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The best choice is the 4.7-liter V8, which returned 15 mpg overall. Handling is secure and the ride is sound. The rear seat is too low to give adequate support. Fit and finish is disappointing. ESC and curtain air bags are standard. Reliability has been well below average.
