Pros:
Price, Off Road Ability, Mazda dealers vs. Ford, Styling, Power, Build Quality, On Road Handling, Standard Features, Time-tested, proven platform, solid drivetrain, and reliability
Cons:
Fuel economy with 4.0 liter engine and 4.10 rear axle (can be improved by swapping out the rear axle...very cheap), Time-tested proven platform means that it hasn't been substantially redesigned since 1994 so you lose some of the features available in other trucks but you gain reliability and longevity.
Overall review:
Face it...it's a Ranger with a Mazda badge. The only Mazda component on this truck is the manual transmission, if equipped. That's it. If you're looking for a truck to drive around town and never go off road, there are better choices. But if you want a truck that's outstanding off road and perfectly tolerable on road, the Ranger and B-series are a great pick and an excellent value. If you can find one, the Mazda is simply a superior value to the Ranger. They're well-equipped, generally have better dealers than Ford, and are priced lower in both the new and pre-owned markets. The 4x4 B4000 SE is like an FX4 ranger (Not a level II, but just a regular FX4). You get the skid plates, the limited slip, 4.0, a standard automatic, and all the FX4 trimmings BUT the Mazda has carpeted floors and jump seats standard. It's not unusual to see brand new B4000 SE's going for less than $20k these days and that's a superior value. I like this truck a lot and I like the Ranger equally.
