The 2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD debuts an all-new version of the Duramax 6600 turbo-diesel V8 engine as an option. When combined with the optional all-new Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission, the new Duramax 6600 delivers more power with 360 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. The power increase comes with lower emissions and significantly improved quietness and smoothness. The Duramax 6600 features the capability of the variable-geometry turbocharger to provide exhaust braking with this function available on some medium duty truck models. With the new system, engine-braking is controlled by a signal from the engine controller and can be activated by the driver. The optional Allison 1000 is the first six-speed automatic offered in the category and is available with either the Duramax 6600 6.6-liter V8 diesel or the Vortec 8100 8.1-liter V8 engine.

Great heavy duty truck by Diesel on 03/20/2011. Trim: 2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLE1 Crew Cab 4WD, Owned 5 years.

Pros: Very comfortable interior and plenty of power without any alterations to the power train. Fuel mileage is around 16 overall unloaded.
Cons: Problem with power steering pump which affects the power brakes and power steering. $375 to repair. problem with drivers side glass, it broke when I closed the door. LED lights went out in 2 controls out of 6 on the steering wheel and drivers door control panel. Rear tail light leaks water into and causes the bulbs to burn out. You can't park this truck into a standard parking space unless you back it in. Four wheel drive is functional but it needs a traction bar to keep the rear wheel from hopping. Oil changes and diesel fuel too expensive. Don't buy one unless you need the diesel power.
Overall review: buy it if you need heavy duty!
