Watch out for the 50,000 mile mark!
by G-Jersey Shore on 09/23/2005.
Trim: 2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder, Owned 4 years.

Pros:
Before this week I would have agreed with everyone's opinion on the car. I loved it and had zero problems. Ran great, was fun to drive, very quick, very stylish.
Cons:
Two weeks ago the catalytic converter was fried and blew all of the debris into the other Cat Converter and destroyed both including the exhaust system. $2,500 worth of parts and labor, all covered under the extended warranty I purchased when the car was bought. Two days ago the engine oil light came on and the car started pinging badly. I brought it immediately to the dealer and the entire engine was blown. Cost to replace with a new engine, $7,000. Engine was also covered under the extended warrenty I purchased.
Overall review:
Watch out for the 50,000 mile mark. I hope everyone who owns the Spyder purchased the extended warranty. It would have cost me almost $10,000 out of pocket expenses to get my fairly new 2001 Spyder back up and running. Would have been a tough nut to swallow when I assumed the car, being a Toyota, would have driven for 150,000 miles with frequesnt oil changes, which I did every 3,000 miles, and scheduled maintanance. Hope your luck is better than mine. The above information that I have only owned the car for 1 year is inaccurate. I am the original owner.
