If you have a well equipped toolbox and a garage, this may be a car for you

Trim: 2000 Mercedes-Benz CL500, Owned 6 years.

Pros:
It is the very definition of luxury. When everything works that is...
And it is one of the most elegantly designed vehicles in the world. In my opinion, it outperforms the successor, the C/W 216.
Cons:
...And it does not always work....
If you are low on money, and is looking for an inexpenceive CL you need to make sure (!) that the previous owner maintained it. One example: Mercedes does not specify that the ABC oil needs to be replaced, but it does. It rottens and becomes grayish with a consistence that more resembles water. The ABC-system also has a pulsation dampener which needs to be replaced after some 160,000 miles or so. As always - look for the post face-lift cars (2003+) They have a better navigation system and some other improvements.
Overall review:
If you are comfortable with learning how to maintain the car and have a decent set of tools and knows how to use the internet, there is a lot of information from other enthusiasts on the possible problems that can arise. The most expenceive one being the ABC-system (Active Body Control) and its care. If you dare to open the bonnet or take apart the interior in search of a problem, this may be an inexpeceive luxury car to own and drive. If you dont - then stay away! There is more or less a l w a y s some little thing that needs to be fixed.
But when everything works, it is a wonderful car to drive.
