A great, reliable, sleeper SUV
by Snowbound in Seattle on 12/18/2008.
Trim: 1999 Mitsubishi Montero 4WD, Owned 2 years.

Pros:
Good mpg considering size, fantastic 4x4 performance especially in snow and mud, reliable.
Cons:
Torque. Interior could hold up better, but is fine for a second or 3rd car.
Overall review:
Bought this as a "spare" 3rd car to deal with the snow conditions in the winter of the PNW. Amazing off-road and winter performance, beat my Jeep Wrangler easily. In the worst storm in years, I rescued my babysitter while easily driving around other stuck SUV's. The Montero is a real off - road mountain goat, and a true competitor to the Toyata Landcruiser at about half to 2/3rds the price. It easily holds 7 when we get company visiting, but still returns 16-18 mpg. I towed a 20" travel trailer and only then found its weak spot (torque), but still made it fine. Would easily recommend. Servicing is cheap (except at dealer), but you need to regularly change fluids.
I bought mine with 104k miles and I've since added about 14k in the past three years. No issues at all, it starts up fine, handles reasonably (considering its heft and height), and has a spectacular transmission that allows me to dial in the right mode for the conditions.
