New for 1999 Dodge Caravan
The 1999 Caravan features new front end styling on all trims, with the Sport and ES receiving distinctive sportier styling. The ES is the first minivan to feature AutoStick transmission and 17-inch wheels. Caravans with Quad Seating can now be equipped with a reclining child safety seat, and all Caravans now come with a cargo net between the front seats.
Introduction
Not only did the Dodge Caravan (and its Plymouth Voyager sibling) profoundly change the American automotive landscape, it changed the language: Before fall 1983 the word minivan was unknown. From that moment on, the rest of the auto industry has been scrambling to catch up, since Chrysler has always been one step ahead with such features as all-wheel drive, an extended-length trim, an optional driver's-side sliding door and seats with rollers for easier removal. The current Caravan, the model's third generation, was introduced in 1996.
