The mighty van that refuses to quit. by Pontiac dweller. on 06/10/2011. Trim: 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport 3-Door, Owned 9 years.

Pros: Reliability, good gas mileage, sporty and slightly aggressive styling. The van I own is the regular 3-door and not the extended Montana version which is not the most comfortable van but it gets the job done. The Pontiac Transport looks nicer and sportier than most mini-vans if you get fog lights and if the color of the bumpers match the body. As many owners have mentioned the Pontiac Transport is surprisingly fast. It has kick to it when you step on the gas which is common for a Pontiac. Overall the balance of power and fuel economy makes the Pontiac Transport a perfect mini-van for families who are constantly on the go. The best part of the Transport is the reasonable price.
Cons: The regular 3-door version is not very comfortable for passengers in back rows which ruins the whole concept of the minivan. Even the children are uncomfortable in the van. So if you want the family to ride along with you (chances are you want to purchase a mini-van only to haul around the kids) buy the Montana or extended version. The Montana or extended version is much more comfortable for the family. I rented the same year Montana for a road-trip and everyone was comfortable and we are a family of tall people. A notable problem is the battery is located under the fuse box which is a pain when the battery needs to be recharged. Even roadside assistance has problems with it.
Overall review: Overall the Pontiac Transport is a great van. Some people say its looks are similar to the Dodge Caravan but the Transport is a sportier and more stylish version of the Caravan. The fuel efficiency and power is perfectly balanced and the family will ride comfortable if you buy the Montana version. I love my Pontiac because it is a great value. I purchased my Transport in 2002 for less then $7,000 and I drive it daily to this day. It is comfortable for my long commutes to work (50+ miles daily) and it gets excellent gas mileage on the highway. Unfortunately, my van has over 160k miles and is in need of some major repairs but after all of the torture it has endured, I am considering rebuilding the engine and transmission because it is still running strong even in my very long commutes to work. In conclusion, if you want a family van at a great price, the Transport is for you. It will keep going and going unlike the other cars I've owned.
