Villager GS, a dependable mini van by grimmy from columbus ohio on 06/16/2003. Trim: 1998 Mercury Villager GS, Owned 4 years.
Pros: has enough acceleration to get into highway traffic. i get the mileage its suppose to 18 city 22 highway. i have only encountered oddball breakage (back hatch latch, motor for rear window opener, things like that). very nice to take on a trip as you can pack as much as needed and still dont feel cramped. middle seats come out to give more room when using bench seat for adults. middle 2 seats are very easy to take out. it would be better if the back bench came out though. seat belts are easy to reach and buckle up, even for kids in safety seats. rear window defrost / wiper is great. the four front seats are very comfortable for this type of vehicle.
Cons: shifting into second gear is usually accompanied with a thud. had the transmission torn apart and new parts put in under warranty, still has the same problem. i was told, "thats how they are". front seat belts are a little uncomfortable at times and i've been wearing seat belts for well over 10 years (harness style, not lap belt). outside mirrors are too small. most vehicles have this problem though. gear indicator light went out. very inconvenient and expensive to replace as most of the dashboard must come apart. side door stop will release if you are parked on a slope. turning radius isnt the best either which can make backing up a small adventure.
Overall review: i've had great luck with the '98 villager gs that i own. no major mechanical problems which means i'm driving it more often and have more confidence to go on long trips. it has been in weather ranging from snow storms and -10 degrees to 100 degrees and humid and performs very nicely. a little extra power in the motor and a cleaner 1st to 2nd shifting would be great, along with a second side door. this has been by far my most reliable vehicle to date. following the schedule maintenance has obviously helped there. if you dont like cars and dont want a big conversion van, then this is the perfect fit for you.
