Audi fan forever! by Audiholic - Seattle, WA on 05/10/2008. Trim: 1997 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro, Owned 6 years.
Pros: I've owned a 1997 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8L for almost 6 years now. Stock car is already beautiful and has great handling, but with just a few additions (for me: suspension, tint, wheels, etc.) it really stands out. The AWD system has been very reliable and is phenominal in dry, wet, snow/icy conditions...you name it. Lots of aftermarket cosmetic mods available. Car still gets compliments regularly and is a head turner. Perfect cross between luxury and sporty, yet extremely functional and safe. Great for road trips or daily driving. The extras like front/back fog lights, leather, heated seats, sport/cold weather packages really make this car. Car has never "broken down" and left me stranded.
Cons: Maintenance, parts, and labor are not the cheapest. You need to realize this before you buy, in addition to doing your homework on the previous owner (if you buy used). If possible, do as much work yourself to ofset the costs. Parts replaced (or replaced by my shop): belts, plugs, fluids in the engine/transmission/differential/cooling system, rear differential seals, right rear wheel bearing. Not many performance mods for this engine, and the ones you'll find are pretty expensive.
Overall review: For me, this car is perfect. AWD, compact yet 4 doors, beautiful European design with lots of options for modification, rediculously amazing in the snow (only snow deeper than the bumper has ever stopped it), and it will run circles around 95% of the vehilces on the road in when put in bad weather/road conditions. It just needs a little more power, although a good 2.8L driver can give a new 3.0 a run for his money! Repairs can be costly so keep it maintained and find a good Audi mechanic or European shop that you can TRUST. I recommed them over a dealership any day. For me, the safety it provdes and the confidence it gives you while driving is reason enough to buy. The beauty, comfort, functionality just make it that much better.
