My Turquoise Dave Ramsey's Car-Fun to drive! by Stick Shift/Turquoise Color Lover - Pelham, NH on 05/21/2010. Trim: 1993 Ford Escort Wagon LX, Owned 1 year.
Pros: I like that it's a 5 Speed, that is my favorite color, that gives great gas mileage, it has low mileage (only 90K), that is mine and is paid for, that it fits my Mobile DJ equipment, that handles good in the snow, that has automatic seat belts...well you get the picture! I saw this car for sale on my way to buy another vehicle and after reading the reviews I had to have it. . While the car is far from being perfect after all these years, it has a solid engine & 4 commuting 2 work it's ideal. I get about 300 city miles to the tank full (11.2 gals), but about 350 miles or more for highway miles. That's about 27 to 31 MPG! I go about 2 weeks without needing gas! It fills up with less than $30!
Cons: It was on sale 4 $1K and I bought it 4 only $700, but had to put in about $400 to make it pass inspection because of a rusted stabilizer bar, & a few minor details (blown light bulbs, worn windshield wipers, etc.) A tree fell on it a few weeks after I got it, bent the roof rack, and it made the roof leak water in when it rained, so it got a bit smelly. The A/C & heater doesn't work, the fan sets up the circuit breaker, & the radiator was leaking at first. One of the doors don't open, & it has quite a bit of road noise. It only had a factory radio but I put my own CD player in. Had 2 replace another bar with after market parts because most parts aren't manufactured no more. Still a good car!
Overall review: Even though rusted parts can be a big issue for inspection, and the parts are not so easily accessible at times, with a good engine like this car has, if you can live with the not so convenient issues of the accessories and aesthetics, this is still by far one of the best used car deals available out there, and after cash for clunkers, good cheap used cars are harder to find. There aren't too many left on the road, but the few that can be salvaged serve a great purpose to take you from point A to point B, which is what a car is supposed to do! Don't get into a car note, get a good used car that you can save up and pay cash for, act your wage, and you will be able to afford something better down the line! Cars lose their value too quickly and are not good investments. Don't get caught up on paying high insurance rates, interest, and over the value prices. It's not worth it!
