An "A to B" reliable traveler.... by North42g on 08/28/2011. Trim: 1992 Subaru Loyale Base, Owned 3 years.
Pros: I bought this vehicle 4 years ago, it had 55,000 on the odometer, I paid nine hundred dollars. So far only oil changes, Timing belt and routine maintenance has been required. The fuel economy is 28-32 MPG. Everything is still working as it should. It currently has 101,000 miles on it. For a commuter car it does very well. The car is a tank in the snow...it will brave the tough New England Winters with out issue!
Cons: Very slow to accelerate. Its not the lack of engine, its the lack of transmission. The 3 speed automatic transmission prevents any power or pick up. [It needs a four speed. A five speed manual is probably the best way to go.] The Engine has a slight mis-fire at idle- multiple mechanics have attempted repair to no avail. The front wheel drive train should be All Wheel Drive instead-like all other Subaru's. The undersized 13 inch diameter tires prevent good handleing on windy roads- drive slow and you'll be just fine.
Overall review: Overall the vehicle is a very good pick. The engine will last along time if the oil/fluids are changed frequently. A very reliable vehicle. Subaru has had the same "Boxer Style" engine for 25-30 years with out ant significant changes, they are doing something right! Subaru is the way to go. This car has NEVER left me starnded. I doubt it ever will.
