The Tank by JuhCoby from Washington on 05/20/2011. Trim: 1992 Ford Escort Wagon LX, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: Extreme reliability, excellent gas milage, and easy maintenance. After pushing this car over 255,000 miles, it still runs better than most of my friends' newer cars. My Escort has saved me in the snow, the ice, and the rain. Considering the number of miles on the vehicle, maintenence required has been exceptionally low. Hatch hydraulics, 2 clutches, 2 timing belts, Thermostat, Oxygen sensor and Heater core have been replaced, all by me. Trunk and rack space are great for long trips. Just brought it from Washington to Michigan (2500 miles) in 4 days with no problems other than a small radiator leak.
Cons: Power, of course, is lacking as expected. Mountain passes tend to be difficult to cross, and freeway merging is slightly more difficult. Braking could be improved, though this is due mainly to the weight of the car. The interior isn't too comfortable, but is not a serious problem. The paint starts to fade after around10 years (My car is starting to turn pink). This isn't a cool car, but it is effective.
Overall review: Excellent family or student car. Stands up to abuse. Relatively hassle free. Not as much power as most would like, but enough to be effective and safe. Maintenance is much easier to perform on this car than most others. Incredible gas milage, approaching 40 miles per gallon when driven correctly. Surprisingly stable on the road during tight turns and hard braking. I've never managed to wreck mine other than hitting a deer and cracking the front bumper.
