You'd probably brag a little too. by breadtie in Leburn, KY on 09/29/2006. Trim: 1991 Saab 900 Turbo convertible, Owned 3 years.
Pros: I'm the proud owner of a monte carlo yellow convertible intercooled turbo automatic 1991 Saab 900 SE. It's an awesome car, but not for everyone. There's a little confusion about which category this car falls into, it may be the "Summer in Sweden" edition, but, although a lot of ppl think it is an SPG (special package), only a select few hatchbacks are listed as such that I can find, although mine does have the factory SPG body kit. There was a conv. SPG made in 88, But this model is a bit more rare than even those. Only 300 of these cars were imported to the U.S. (mine is from in Nystad, Finland). They were all imports, though, only released to Saab dealers. If you can find this car, get it!
Cons: It does get a bit old taking care of the small things that come up with these vehicles. After all, it's a 91 model! Other than Toyotas or very rare Cavaliers, most '91s have been sitting on their rear for a few years now. Just got done switching out the transmission (which I did myself) but I don't blame the engineering for the trans. going out, one of my friends drove it very roughly (he payed up for it, though). Other than the trans. everything else held up splendidly. This is a good, solid car. Take it from a mechanic w/ about 2 decades experience, they definitely don't make them like this anymore. With proper maintainence and a few fixes, you can easily get 300K+ miles out of this model.
Overall review: Next time you meet someone who owns a Saab of this approximate year model, ask him/her if you can rap your knuckles on the fender (or out-of-the-way body panel. If they are TRUE Saab owners, they'll be very protective). Careful though, YOU'LL HURT YOURSELF! This is one of the most solid vehicles produced post-Jimmy Carter! Before that, every car was a big moving hunk of thick metal. Saab started out designing aircraft, which is where the sleek and somewhat variagated look comes from. But they also take pains to make some of the safest vehicles ever designed. The weight to power ratio is impressive, but it does still have the feel of driving a tank. Gas mileage is pretty good, but I've only got 65K miles on mine. Very protective. It IS a classic, so it also helps to be a mechanic w/your own garage to work on restorations like this. Carfax is horrible. Listed my assuming the title as a RED FLAG! A simple title change?! Be careful when buying a 91, but do your homework and you'll be fine.
