If you find a good used one, buy it. by An MSN Autos Consumer on 12/19/2011. Trim: 1989 Honda Accord LX sedan, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: Reliability, gas mileage, comfort, style (pop up headlights, classic 80s), it's a Honda. It's incredible how much gas this thing doesn't use. It's better than some of today's cars and it's carbureted and from the 80s. This car is old so you MUST let it idle for a bit after starting up (push the gas pedal in once or twice on a cold start to keep from hurting the starter). It should idle over 2,000RPM's until properly warmed up. Just tap the gas and let it settle and you'll be good to go. Not doing this could hurt in gear idle and overall performance.
Cons: Needs a bit more power, without suffering from fuel consumption (fuel injection). This thing has an unnecessary amount of vacuum lines, which makes tinkering difficult. If you know what you're doing, you can remove the unnecessary ones easily.
Overall review: Averaging 28 city and just under 40 highway. Changed the fuel filters(it has two)/pump, very clean carburetor, K&N air filter, performance radiator and well maintained set of tires. Just remember to use no ethanol fuel if available in your area, especially if you have the carburetor version, as it can help keep the fuel system clean and maintain good MPG's. Just do standard maintenance and it'll last forever. Transmission fluid, power steering, brakes, high mileage oil, tire balance/rotation/alignment, carburetor/fuel system cleaner, K&N recharge (if you don't own a K&N filter, buy one, it's worth it). Just under 300,000 miles and still kicking. Road trips are great too. 650 miles was our most recent one and we only topped off 1 time and still had 3 quarters of a tank left. Plus everything still works. Cruise control, cigarette lighter, AC/heat, power windows and locks.
