The Iron Swede by Volvogirl88 on 06/30/2010. Trim: 1988 Volvo 240 DL, Owned 1 year.
Pros: The reliability of these vehicle has been outstanding mechanically. I bought this car last year with 249,000, and I now have 275,000, I am the third owner, and I plan to keep her until the end. The gas milage is good, the specs say 27 highway, but i have gotten 30 on steady highway trips. It's a tank with roll bars. I've seen these flipped on youtube, and they are able to drive off afterwords. I have even heard a story from a mechanic where someone rear ended one and all it had was a broken tail light, the other car was totaled. Cheap to run, plenty of parts, salvage yards are a great resource. the rear wheel traction is great in snow due to evenly distributed weight.
Cons: My only troubles have been motor mounts; one rear stabilizer arm broke (it was rusted out due to nys roads, and doing donuts in the parking lot with this wagon didn't help either). Break lines locked up due to age. The exhaust had a slight hole in the manifold area and the pipe separated at the catalytic converter part, which all was repaired through a good welder cheap. Cracked dashboard, some slightly torn seats, she is 22 years old so its forgivable. The gas gage has gone, and the temp gage jumps around at times, but the car doesn't over heat. One nit pick the heated seats don't work. Paint kind of faded, rust in areas, outdoors in nys weather continually, so not too much of a surprise.
Overall review: As a whole she gets a 9 out of 10, i subtracted one for the small issues i have had, otherwise this has been the best car i have driven in my 23 years of driving. Her hauling ability is excellent, hauled a couch with it. Her ride is smooth as glass, and the engine performance does very well with the 5 speed manual trans. To some the look is ugly, but its unique appearance is great for finding it in large parking lots. I happen to like the way she looks. Parts have been cheap, and readily available. My friend had one last 600,000 miles. I traded away a 2000 Ford Focus for this, and have no regrets.
