Fast, fun and expensive by Tim Gray, Toronto, Ontario on 03/25/2009. Trim: 1988 Saab 900 Turbo convertible, Owned 1 year.
Pros: I love the looks and drivability of this car. Nothing beats it with the top down and the turbo kicked in on a country road headed to the cottage in the summer. Seats 4 people as well and the trunk can actually carry a weekend bag for all the passengers. Great on gas and love the heater (nuclear powered it seems) and the heated leather seats. All the fancy electric options (including cruise) work even though the car is 21 years old.
Cons: In a word. Maintenance. This car breaks in places that you did not know exist. I have a 1984 Suburban and I have never done anything to it except tires, brakes and mufflers every few 10s of thousands of KMs. This car seems to want to spend its time in the shop and parts are expensive and increasingly hard to find. In the past year I have replace windshield wiper mechanism ($300), a transmission mount ($500), vacuum hoses ($300), muffler mounts and hangers ($300), ball joints and rocker arm ($700) and now it is in the shop because it will not work in reverse. My very nice Saab mechanic tells me it will be very expensive. You have to like this car a lot to own it.
Overall review: Beautiful, well designed, a blast to drive but finicky and in need of constant repair. I love it but I may not be able to keep it. Good thing I do not need to drive it to work or live on a fixed income.
