The Red Baron... 240,000 miles and still going strong. by VirginiaF1 from Richmond on 04/27/2011. Trim: 1988 Porsche 944 Coupe, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: After 23 years, I finally own my high school dream car. Le Mans racing experience of the 924C GTR speaks well of the design. Yes, my red 8-valve now has 240,000+ miles but it just passed state inspection; all the lights work, and every switch except A/C compressor works. Hard to imagine many cars from 1988 that can say that as it approaches 1/4 million miles. Chassis still solid. Steering still crisp and near telepathic. 50/50% F/R weight balance makes rapid corner transitions sublime. Recent Updates include: pads & rotors, belts, rollers, hoses, timing/waterpump, fluids, sparks, distributor, battery, mounts and bushings. Paid US$1700 for a garage kept, 3 owner adult-driven beauty.
Cons: NO CUPHOLDER! Ha, ha just kidding.. I imagine late '80's German law prohibited drinking hot beverages whilst autobahning at 137mph. My big American bottom does not fit as well into the lovely seats as a lithe race driver's would.. my bad. But really, the fixed steering wheel is the only true disappointment. Averaging 29 mpg highway is my hope with only 5 forward gears instead of today's 6-speeds. IMHO, Only today's Genesis Coupe matches the form of this classic; albeit at 12 times the price I paid.
Overall review: If you visited this page ( as i've done for years now) with a mind to dipping into the Porsche Gene Pool, just do it! Provided you have a monthly cash flow sufficient to not completely ignore this car's well-engineered mechanicals, be not afraid... I feel that i-4 Accords & Camrys, non-turbo Volvo 740's, i-6 Bimmers, air-cooled 911's and i-4 Porsches represent the senior citizens of gasoline engine durability; provided the owners keep to the maintenance schedules. For me, the 944 has a nice cargo/hatch for 2 golf bags, 2 overnight bags and a back seat for two more bags; or for my 2 favorite legless dwarfs. :o) Overall, this car has the passion I miss from my Alfa Milano; the solidity I enjoyed from my Audi; and the driving feedback a la 325is. The first sentence from the owner's manual reads: " Judging by the car you have chosen... you are a motorist of a special breed." At Porsche, they know us well ..
