Good 17 Year Old Truck by Bass Guitar Mike on 08/16/2005. Trim: 1988 GMC S15 Pickup Reg. Cab Long Bed 4WD, Owned 5 years.
Pros: Good fuel economy, good cargo capacity, good in snow, 4.3L engine has plenty of power, no rattles, handles well for a pickup. It's simple so parts are plentiful and relatively inexpensive.
Cons: Feels "hurried" at 75 mph, not enough interior storage space, more road and wind noise than I'd like, engine compartment is very crowded. The brakes could be better.
Overall review: This truck spent it's entire life as a company truck until I purchased it in 2000 and it had not been cared for. To make a long story short, the transmission was shot and it had 230,000 miles on it when I bought it. I rebuilt it, installed a GM rebuilt engine and had the transmission rebuilt, painted it, etc. After crawling all over, around, and through it for about 3 months, I came to know it pretty well. It's very ruggedly built with a beefy frame. The transission is the same one used with the 350 in trucks. On the other hand, a 4.3L engine with that transmission are big for a small truck, and it's difficult to work on. The front differential appears to be too small also. All in all, I really like this truck. It's a good commuter vehicle and gets about 20 mpg in town, 24 on the highway. It's been very dependable over 50,000 miles. Remember, this truck was built for the 55 mph speed limit and it's 17 years old with 280,000 miles on it. All things considered, it's great!
