Beater by Skycar from California on 05/05/2012. Trim: 2001 Toyota Corolla CE, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: This is a great used commuter car for college students. Most of the cabin mechanics are manual on a 3 speed automatic CE so there is less worry on what could brake. The car takes abuse very well. As long as you maintain the car and put the money into it you should get the 32mpg highway and hope it lasts to 125,000mi. Excellent for parking towers with cramped spaces and tight turning radius U-turn streets. Car will get to you from A to B. Car can be driven at 80mph with stability. Braking capacity is decent but the braking distance is standard.
Cons: Never meant to be driven above 70mph. Not for long journeys. NO acceleration. Mediocre handling. Trunk door hinge hinders space. No creature comfort or rear leg room for new purc price. Check engine light has come on few times. Definitely oil burning engine every 1500 miles after 50K. Interior roof fabric collapsing, door trim interior and exterior peeling after 5 years. 60K as of mid 2012.
Overall review: It really depends on the condition and quality of workmanship you get with that particular unit. It turns out the unit I am using has numerous common problems and I have personally verified this is not unique. The dealer also admits the cosmetic damage over time could have been Toyota's fault but will not assist me in raising the claim to headquarters or fixing the problem at a lesser cost. The vehicle is good for an abuse driven commute so long as you can put oil in the engine, don't mind the appearance, and understand the reliability drops to zero right as the odometer rolls over 100,000. Overall, the quality is not there, the specifications are not there, and the reliability is questionable. This is a car. Not a Toyota.
