964 - Under appreciated and a car ahead of it's time
by An MSN Autos Consumer on 09/12/2010.
Trim: 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2, Owned 1 year.

Pros:
Classic recognizable 911 shape. Simple instrument panel - no electronics (which may be a drawback for some). AC that actually works. Plenty of horsepower in the 3.6L engine. Rear seats are essentially child seats. Relatively maintenance free - I say relatively. You can run and operate this vehicle with minimal cash outlay - however it becomes a slippery slope as you start to spend money to upgrade - brakes, suspension, rims, chips, exhaust etc.
Cons:
Little gremlins become an annoyance - however are usually simple to remedy (eg. window switches). Constant oil drips - very rare to find a dripless air-cooled car. Factory (North American) suspension is a joke - if it hasn't been done you'll need to lower the car for appearance and handling.
Overall review:
Overall, the "964" is one of the 911's that doesn't quite get all the respect it deserves. It was the first major change from the pre 89 911. Cosmetically it looked very similar however under the skin it was 95% a totally different car. It's stuck between a rock and a hard place, sitting in between the "993" and the pre 89 911's. The 964 is definately a car that should not be overlooked, in time it may garner some more appreciation. Great value for the capital outlay required these days.
