Be Aware Before Purchasing by Long-time Ford Guy from Sarasota on 11/15/2012. Trim: 2010 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0L 2WD, Owned 2 years.
Useful?
Pros: The looks and size ar exellent. Towing capability is adequate. Comfortable drivers seat. Good expandable cargo space. Driver 380 vision is good.
Cons: Vehicle lurches when re-excellerating after coasting or slowing causing a dangerous situation, especially in traffic (neighbor's 2008 Explorer has same problem). Poor gas mileage. Transmission shifts hard. Seat material holds onto debris-difficult to clean. Running boards and roof rack have faded to grey. Interior materials do not hold up to normal use. Dash instruments hard to see in day light. Ford Customer Service is not customer friendly in resolving problems. Stock answer, "that is just the nature of the vehicle." Their overall attitude is that customer is ignorant so they will say anything to make you go away concerned there might be a law suit or a resulting recall of vehicles.
Overall review: Except for the mechanical problems and the lack of concern on the part of Ford Dealers and Corporate in trying to rectify the surging safety problem, the vehicle would be enjoyable to own.
