The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is redesigned, with a more rigid aluminum-unit body, a new engine, updatedl technology in the roadster’s interior and an upgraded version of its retractable hardtop. The 2013 SL is now constructed almost entirely of aluminum, both the frame and body parts, which cuts over 200 pounds from the previous model’s weight. High-strength steel is used in the roof pillars, and overall, the new SL body is about 20 percent stiffer. The 2013 SL is 2 inches longer and wider than the outgoing model, with new bi-xenon headlights and slightly modified rear taillights. The roadster’s wider stance increases interior room, and new features include Magic Vision Control, which features windshield-wiper blades that improve cleaning without impairing driver visibility during the spray process. A new 4.6-liter V8 engine replaces the previous 5.5-liter V8, yet produces 14 percent better fuel economy and 12 percent more horsepower, at 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. A start-stop feature has also been added. The retractable top features a panoramic glass roof, and an optional Magic Sky Control feature darkens or lightens the roof’s glass, like a pair of transition eyeglasses.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class reviews by MSN Autos
ConsumerReports.org® Short Take
The new SL uses a 4.6-liter V8 good for 429 hp, up from 382 in the previous 5.4-liter. A start-stop system that shuts the engine off at stops saves some gas. It looks a lot like the old two-seat roadster with its retractable hardtop. But it's slightly longer and wider, and made almost entirely of weight-saving aluminum. It is full of new high-tech features and safety equipment. The outgoing SL blended sportiness and luxury, with a powerful engine and agile handling.
