Simple, Comfortable by Dad from Springfield on 03/14/2014. Trim: 2014 Nissan Xterra PRO-4X 5AT 4X4, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Very reasonable price. Heavy duty engine, transmission and 4WD system is standard. It tows 5,000lbs with the addition of just a hitch and electrics. Easy to clean interior. Lots of cargo space. Roof rack and steps so you can get up there. Roomy and comfortable seats, front and rear. Intuitive audio and navigation system. Great all around visibility due to large rear windows means easier backing up with a trailer. Superior off road comfort, handling and capability due to low gearing, locking differential and downhill speed control.
Overall review: This is a truck based, functional and strong SUV. It carries 5 people, tows 5,000lbs, goes off road, carries messy stuff in the back. It is attractive, functional, simple and well built. The rear cargo area is easy to clean plastic with tie downs that keep luggage from flying around. The durable interior is fantastic for a messy active family with teens and pets. The suspension and comfortable seats are firm and compliant. It handles well on smooth interstates to off road potholes. Unlike many SUVs with light duty All Wheel Drive, the Xterra has a long lasting, simple, heavy duty part-time four wheel drive system with 4 low gearing. With the 4 wheel drive disengaged on paved roads, 4WD wear is zero. Compared to the new Jeep Cherokee's complex computer controlled 9 speed all wheel drive system, the Xterra has 10 gears with its 4 Hi/Lo drive system. Opt for the 6 speed manual and get 12 speeds with the same 4Hi/Lo system. The manual locking differential means never getting stuck.
