Last year, Volvo instituted a new naming designation for all of its models. Formerly badged the 960, the S90 sedan occupies the top of the company's North American product line. It was introduced as the 940 in 1990, and received its current 6-cylinder power plant in 1992. The S90 comes standard with everything luxury-sedan buyers expect. Volvos have a reputation for safety that goes back to the '50s; the company was first to install 3-point lap and shoulder belts as standard equipment, and was an early adopter of 4-wheel disc brakes. Volvo was also the first company to offer side-impact airbags, which are part of its Side Impact Protection System. Nine out of ten of this car's buyers are married.
