In 1998 the best-selling sedan in Volvo's North American model line got a new interior and a new name. Although Volvos were once seen as safe if somewhat stodgy, the S70's predecessor, the 850, was widely praised for its spirited performance and handling; traits that have been enhanced in the new model. The look of the S70 continues another change in direction for Volvomore rounded styling. Something that hasn't changed is Volvo's commitment to occupant protection, as evidenced by its Side Impact Protection System, which supplements frontal airbags and improved seat belt pretensioners with side-impact airbags. Incidentally, under Volvo's new model-naming scheme, S stands for sedan, V is for versatility and C denotes a coupe.
