Introduced in 1993 as a performance-oriented front-wheel-drive car, the 850 was positioned as the Swedish automakers midsize sedan with a slightly sporting attitude. Discontinued early in 1997, the 850 was replaced by the S70, however 850 models still remain available. Offered with 5-cylinder normally-aspirated or turbocharged engines, the 850s growing popularity has translated into increased sales, which account for well over 50% of Volvo's total U.S. sales. The 1997 model year sees the addition of a new light-pressure turbo motor to the 850 GLT Sedan, increasing both performance and drivability. This power plant makes the 850 GLT the third turbocharged model in the 850s four-model sedan lineup behind the 850R and 850 T5. Volvo has already introduced its 1998 replacement for the 850, called the S70. This vehicle is already on sale, and can be found in MSN Autos.
