The Beetle is Volkswagen’s new modern interpretation of the original Beetle that is redesigned for 2012. The design team looked at the original Beetle profile rather than the 1998 New Beetle to respect the past and look to the future. The result is that the lines of the rear section are almost identical but the 2012 Beetle breaks from the design defined by three semi-circles: front fenders, rear fenders and domed roof, with a bolder and more dynamic design. The 2012 Beetle continues with a front-engine, front-wheel-drive platform, following the New Beetle which first launched in 1998, offering all of the modern amenities that the original Beetle lacked. The convertible was added for the 2003 model year and for 2006 the New Beetle received some updates and a new 5-cyinder engine.
