One of the pioneering marques in the automotive world was created when Englishmen Charles Stewart Rolls and Frederick Henry Royce joined forces in 1904. After taking a trip in a car that ran poorly and proved unreliable, Royce decided he could design a much better car, and did just that. Rolls-Royce motor cars of that time featured state-of-the-art engineering, and even then smooth, quiet operation was the major selling point. Today, Rolls-Royce is owned by Vickers Plc, a British company with interests in aerospace, marine propulsion and metallurgy, in addition to automobiles. While Rolls-Royces are favorites with monarchs, potentates and movie stars, a recent research study showed that Rolls-Royce owners are using their cars more often, and in the same ways the rest of us use our cars. The big product news for 1997 is in the midrange Silver Spur line, which gets a new light-pressure turbocharged V8. Rolls-Royce, as its tradition dictates, will only say that the power output of the new engine is "adequate."
