Introduced in 1967, the Pontiac Firebird is one of only three survivors of what was then called the "pony car" segment. Although there have been Firebirds designed to appeal to many different sporty coupe buyers, the model has always been closely associated with high performance. The Trans Am version, named for the SCCA road racing series that began in the late '60s, continues to be one of the fastest, most powerful automobiles sold in the U.S. today. Even the base model Firebird boasts 200 horsepower at a lower price than many 4-cylinder Japanese sporty coupes. In 1998 the Firebird received new front-end styling as well as the more powerful Corvette-derived LS1 5.7-liter V8.
