The Maxima is Nissan’s flagship sedan that originally joined the Nissan lineup for the 1981 model year. At that time it was a rear-wheel-drive sedan and in 1984 it received a V6 engine for the first time. The second-generation Maxima switched to a front-wheel-drive configuration. Nissan has referred to the Maxima over the years as a "4-door sports car" and has brought back that moniker with the introduction of a new generation Maxima for the 2009 model year.
