The original version of Mazda's MX-6 coupe was the first Mazda to be built in the company's Flat Rock, Michigan plant. Production began in the fall of 1987 with the car's first major redesign in the 1993 model year. From its inception the MX-6 has shared platforms with the 626 sedan and the Ford Probe, while always featuring a markedly different exterior look. In its current guise, MX-6 distinguishes itself with a flowing, curvaceous shapea futuristic look that received attention from the automotive media upon its debut. For 1997 a more powerful V6 engine boosts horsepower to 164the MX-6's only major change for the new model year.
