The HS 250h is the first dedicated hybrid model from Lexus, Toyota’s luxury division and is touted by the automaker as the world’s first hybrid-only luxury vehicle. The HS 250h is powered by the latest Lexus hybrid system that combines the first 4-cylinder engine in a Lexus with two electric motors; one to assist the gasoline engine and the second to act as a starter motor and generator to charge the battery. The HS 250h achieves an EPA-estimated rating of 35 mpg combined using 87-octane fuel. Peak power output for the gasoline engine is 147 horsepower and when combined with the hybrid drive motor the system generates 187 horsepower total. The HS 250h also incorporates a drive-mode switch that allows the driver to select between four modes: Normal, Power, Eco and EV. Under certain circumstances, the HS 250h can be driven in EV mode for short distances using only the electric motors. The standard supplemental restraint system includes 10 airbags and 30 percent of the interior trim and trunk materials use sustainable ecological plastics.
